ISLAMIC, Persia (Post-Mongol). Safavids. Tahmasp II, AH 1135-1145 / AD 1722-1732. Abbasi (Silver, 28 mm, 5.36 g, 5 h), type A, Mashhad, AH 1140 = AD 1727/8. Within a dotted circle, Shiʿa kalima, ‘lā ilāha illā Allāh / Muḥammad / rasūl Allāh ʿAlī w/alī Allāh’ (‘There is no deity but Allah. Muhammad is the messenger of Allah. Ali is the friend of Allah’ in Arabic); in the margin, the names of the twelve shiʿa imams, partially off flan. Rev. Within a dotted circle, the couplet ‘be giti sekke-ye sāhebqerāni / zad az towfiq-e haq Tahmāsb-e sāni’ (‘Tahmasp II struck auspicious coins by God’s grace throughout the world’ in Persian); below, ‘zarb-e Mashhad-e moqaddas 1140’ (‘Struck in Holy Mashhad, 1140’ in Persian).
